The parental cell line of BHK-21 [C-13] was established in March 1961 by I·A·Macpherson and M·G·P·Stoker from a 1-day-old hamster. It was then continuously cultured for 84 days, with only an 8-day interruption for cryopreservation. Clone No. 13, namely BHK-21 [C-13], was derived through single-cell isolation. The BHK-21 [C-13] cells can be used as a transfection host for vectors containing DNA with selection and amplification markers.
